This hand is quite straightforward, the main decision being how to proceed on the turn. The open from the cutoff is very standard, although I would fold it from the hijack because there is not much in the pot to steal, pre-antes, and your hand’s value lies more in its good showdown value than in its potential to win a big pot. Your hand’s value decreases with the number of people left to act, because it is really difficult to play it multi-way.
After you open, the button flats, and you go heads-up to a flop. You can rule out the top of the button’s range because he will most likely be looking to build a pot and stop the blinds from calling at a discounted price. The button’s most likely hands are Broadway cards, middle pocket pairs and some good suited-connectors. The K-4-4 flop at first seems very dry, and an automatic continuation bet, but I would consider check-folding if my opponent were playing tight preflop. One bet will rarely work against a tight range, and you are going to be out of position on the later streets. The 7 helps you because you can barrel on spades, although it could also get you in trouble if you inflate the pot and hit the second-best flush when the turn and river both come spades. An ace on the turn would also be a weird card because it would likely give you the best hand, but it would be hard to obtain two further streets of value. However, despite these drawbacks, the continuation bet should be immediately profitable because Villain still has a lot of unpaired middling cards that didn’t connect with this board at all and will just fold the flop.
After Villain calls the flop, he has either K-x, a middle pocket pair, a flush draw, one of a few 4-x combos or an ace-high. The A is a great card for your hand because you beat most of that range, although it’s a tough spot to proceed in because a second barrel will fold middle pocket pairs and build a pot against a lot of hands that beat you, such as flushes, 4-x and better ace-highs. K-x will be in a tough spot. I would expect K-x without a spade to fold and K-x with a spade to continue, so a second barrel does get value from those hands. You should split your weak A-x range here, barreling with the A-x not containing a spade and check-calling the A-x that does contain a spade. I would lean toward this line because it’s important to protect your hand when it doesn’t contain a spade. Also, by check-calling A-7 with no spade on spade rivers, you can potentially get bluffed or sucked out on by hands that would have folded to a turn bet.
The turn ends up checking through, and you have an easy value bet on the river against a likely K-x hand. On the turn your opponent will almost
